This unique ability is all due to our highly effective heat-loss mechanisms: extremely efficient sweat glands and very fine hair. Compared to chimpanzees (<\/span><i><span>Pan troglodytes<\/span><\/i><span>), humans have the same density of sweat glands and hair. This would suggest a similar ability to cool down in hot environments, but human hair is much thinner and our sweat glands produce far more sweat. This means that humans of today are great at controlling our body temperature!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span><br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"468\" height=\"289\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7319\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch1.png\" alt=\"Chimp vs Human Hair\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch1.png 468w, https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch1-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span><em>Human hair is thinner than chimp hair, but equally spaced.<\/em><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>One possible explanation for these features is bipedalism. <\/span><i><span>Homo erectus<\/span><\/i><span> is the first hominin that switched from mostly walking on four legs to mostly walking on two legs. Standing upright reduces exposure to sunlight, which may have been a useful cooling feature to early hominins scavenging for food during the hottest parts of the day. Specializing in this behavior could have encouraged additional biological adaptations, like cardiovascular changes, sweat, and hair development.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span><br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"432\" height=\"230\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7320\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch2.png\" alt=\"Walking upright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch2.png 432w, https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/88\/2021\/06\/Group-1-Mitch2-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Quadrupeds are exposed to more solar radiation, just like sunbathers on the beach.
