{"id":3853,"date":"2017-06-01T11:38:15","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T15:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=3853"},"modified":"2024-07-23T11:41:41","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:41:41","slug":"yam-mask","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2017\/06\/yam-mask\/","title":{"rendered":"Yam Mask"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3854\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2017\/06\/Yam-Mask-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"566\" \/>The population of Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse in the world.\u00a0 There are more than 800 languages spoken, and many small communities have developed unique customs and traditions. \u00a0This yam mask comes from the Saragum #2 village in the Maprik area of the East Sepik Province.\u00a0 In this area of the country, the cultivation of long yams, which can grow to a length of 12 feet, is a core element of ceremonial life. \u00a0These yams have a purely ritual purpose and are not meant to be eaten.\u00a0 Following the harvest, an extravagant ceremony takes place during which each man exchanges the yams he has grown with those of a permanent partner.\u00a0 The man who is able to repeatedly offer yams longer than those that he receives gains great social status.\u00a0 For the exchange ceremony, the yams are outfitted as men in full ritual costume including masks like this one.\u00a0 The masks are designed specifically for the yams and are not worn by people.\u00a0 Constructed of woven plant fiber, similar to a basket, the masks are colored with clay pigments.\u00a0 This yam mask is in form known as beak style, in which the human face is represented with a long nose similar to the beak of a bird.<\/p>\n<p>Other objects from Papua New Guinea that have been featured for Artifact of the Month include a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2013\/07\/palm-spathe\/\">palm spathe<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2014\/01\/ceremonial-flute\/\">flute<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2019\/01\/dog-tooth-necklace\/\">dog tooth necklace<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2021\/01\/asaro-mud-mask\/\">mud mask<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2022\/01\/cassowary-bone-dagger\/\">cassowary bone dagger<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This yam mask comes from the Saragum #2 village in the Maprik area of East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
