{"id":3789,"date":"2017-04-03T14:27:40","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T18:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=3789"},"modified":"2024-07-23T11:54:20","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:54:20","slug":"bontoc-axe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2017\/04\/bontoc-axe\/","title":{"rendered":"Bontoc Axe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3791\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2017\/04\/axe-webx.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"450\" \/>This early-20<sup>th<\/sup> century axe comes from the Bontoc people of the Philippines.\u00a0 The Bontoc live in the highlands of Luzon, the largest and most populous Philippine island.\u00a0 In the past, the Bontoc practiced headhunting, beheading their enemies during warfare and claiming the severed heads as trophies.\u00a0 Typically, a warrior would attempt to spear his opponent to deliver a mortal blow, but before he died, would decapitate the wounded man using an axe like this one.\u00a0 The trophy head was then brought back to the village where it was smoked, washed, and ritually activated to bring good fortune to the village.\u00a0 Sometimes, the lower jaw was removed to be used as a handle for ceremonial gongs.\u00a0 This Bontoc axe is currently on exhibit in the student-curated mini-exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/exhibits\/temporary-exhibits\/warfare-and-violent-conflict\/\"><em>Warfare and Violent Conflict<\/em><\/a>, in which you can learn more about traditions linked to headhunting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This early-20th century axe comes from the Bontoc people of the Philippines.
