{"id":3714,"date":"2017-01-30T12:49:29","date_gmt":"2017-01-30T17:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=3714"},"modified":"2024-07-23T11:59:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:59:51","slug":"japanese-belt-ornament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2017\/01\/japanese-belt-ornament\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Belt Ornament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3642\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2017\/01\/Pokemon-web.jpg\" alt=\"pokemon-web\" width=\"517\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Popular in 17<sup>th<\/sup> and 18<sup>th<\/sup> century Japan, belt ornaments such as this one are known as <em>netsuke<\/em>. \u00a0Used to fasten belongings to a belt, the elaborately carved ornaments also served as symbols of the wearer\u2019s class, wealth, and taste.\u00a0 This example, which is slightly more than an inch tall, is made of ivory and represents a pair of guardian figures known in Japan as <em>shishi,<\/em> which are represented as having the features of a dog and a lion.\u00a0 <em>Shishi<\/em> are used to ward away malevolent spirits outside of Buddhist and Shinto shrines.\u00a0 A wide range of <em>netsuke<\/em> are currently on exhibit in <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/exhibits\/temporary-exhibits\/playing-with-spirits-pokemon-and-shintoism\/\"><em>Playing with Spirits: Pok<\/em><em>\u00e9mon and Shintoism.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Belt ornaments such as this one are known as netsuke.
