Yup\u2019ik hunters use snow goggles all year.\u00a0 In the winter, they prevent snow blindness caused by the strong reflection of sunlight off the snow.\u00a0 In the summer, they act simply as sunglasses, shading the hunters\u2019 eyes.\u00a0 This pair of goggles was collected by Moravian missionaries working in the Bethel, Alaska, in the 1880s.<\/p>\n<p>Other Yup&#8217;ik objects that have been featured for Artifact of the Month include <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2019\/08\/yupik-dance-fans\/\">dance fans<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2014\/03\/model-kayak\/\">kayak model<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2013\/04\/yupik-hat\/\">wood hat<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These snow goggles were made by the Yup\u2019ik people in the Kuskokwim River Valley of Alaska.
