{"id":3401,"date":"2016-05-19T15:32:22","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T19:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=3401"},"modified":"2024-07-23T12:31:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T16:31:06","slug":"chinese-scroll-painting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2016\/05\/chinese-scroll-painting\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Scroll Painting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3402\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2016\/05\/Chinese-Scroll-Painting-webx.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese Scroll Painting webx\" width=\"210\" height=\"508\" \/><br \/>\nThis early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Chinese scroll painting is currently on exhibit in <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/exhibits\/temporary-exhibits\/incredible-journeys\/\"><em>Incredible Journeys: The Life Histories of Museum Objects<\/em><\/a>, which focuses on how the featured artifacts came to be at the MOA.\u00a0 The painting is in the Northern Song style, which, rather than depicting the subjects in three-dimensional detail, aims to show how the objects in the painting and in real life are alike in spirit.\u00a0 The style plays on the dichotomy between realism and abstraction.<\/p>\n<p>The scroll painting was collected by Marion Dudley, who lived and worked for the YWCA in Hong Kong and Shanghai between 1927 and 1947.\u00a0 She collected dozens of paintings, silks, porcelains, and other decorative objects. Chinese society was experiencing cultural and political upheaval during the period Dudley lived there.\u00a0 As a result, many artists sought to preserve traditional aesthetics while also incorporating Western techniques.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This painting is in the Northern Song style, which, rather than depicting the subjects in three-dimensional detail, aims to show how the objects in the painting and in real life are alike in spirit.
