{"id":3181,"date":"2015-11-03T14:19:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T19:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=3181"},"modified":"2024-07-23T12:37:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T16:37:29","slug":"cote-divoire-toy-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2015\/11\/cote-divoire-toy-car\/","title":{"rendered":"C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire Toy Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3182\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2015\/11\/Toy-Car-webx.jpg\" alt=\"Toy Car webx\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This toy car was made by a boy of about 10 years old in Ouassou, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, in the late 1990s.\u00a0 Cars like this one are made by youths in many parts of Africa using whatever materials are available, such as the sandal soles cut to make the wheels on this car.\u00a0 The toy car is in the shape of Peugeot minivan, likely modeled after one of the many used vehicles shipped to C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire to serve as \u201cbush taxis.\u201d\u00a0 These vehicles stop to pick up passengers as they make circuits through major cities, or as they cruise the roadways between rural towns.\u00a0 This object is on exhibit in our new student-curated permanent exhibit, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/exhibits\/permanent-exhibits\/exhibit-childhood\/\">Childhood: Exploring Youth Culture Around the World<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Anthropology student Maeghan Livingston researched this object for the exhibit.\u00a0 The accompanying photos, taken by former MOA curator, Beverlye Hancock, show the toy being made and used in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3190\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2015\/11\/Toy-Car-Used2-webx.jpg\" alt=\"Toy Car Used2 webx\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3183 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2015\/11\/Toy-Car-Used-webx.jpg\" alt=\"Toy Car Used webx\" width=\"250\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This toy car was made by a boy of about 10 years old in Ouassou, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, in the late 1990s.
