{"id":2664,"date":"2014-01-13T14:05:34","date_gmt":"2014-01-13T19:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=2664"},"modified":"2024-07-23T15:21:50","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T19:21:50","slug":"ceremonial-flute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2014\/01\/ceremonial-flute\/","title":{"rendered":"Ceremonial Flute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2014\/01\/PNG-Fluteweb.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2666\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2014\/01\/PNG-Fluteweb.png\" alt=\"PNG Fluteweb\" width=\"236\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a>This ceremonial flute is from the Mumeri Village in the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.\u00a0 Papua New Guinea is home to one of the most diverse populations in the world with over 1,000 separate communities with their own customs and traditions and more than 800 languages spoken in an area slightly larger than California.<\/p>\n<p>Mumeri Village is particularly noted for their handcrafted flutes which include elaborately designed wooden stoppers decorated with faces representing clan figures as well as totemic animal figures.\u00a0 The stoppers are painted with clay or vegetable based pigments.\u00a0 The sacred flutes are usually played in pairs during ceremonies and initiations.\u00a0 The Mumeri people consider the low melodic tones to be the voices of the clan\u2019s ancestor spirits.\u00a0 Traditionally, women, children, and uninitiated boys are not allowed to see the flute being played.<\/p>\n<p>Other objects from Papua New Guinea that have been featured for Artifact of the Month include a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2013\/07\/palm-spathe\/\">palm spathe<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2017\/06\/yam-mask\/\">yam mask<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2019\/01\/dog-tooth-necklace\/\">dog tooth necklace<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2021\/01\/asaro-mud-mask\/\">mud mask<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2022\/01\/cassowary-bone-dagger\/\">cassowary bone dagger<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This ceremonial flute is from the Mumeri Village in the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.
