{"id":2151,"date":"2013-01-11T14:39:20","date_gmt":"2013-01-11T19:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2024-07-23T16:00:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T20:00:59","slug":"southeastern-dugout-canoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2013\/01\/southeastern-dugout-canoe\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeastern Dugout Canoe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2013\/01\/Canoe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2153\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2013\/01\/Canoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Museum&#8217;s dugout canoe is a familiar object to long-time patrons, as it was on display for many years.\u00a0 Now comfortably resting in the Education room, the canoe continues to fascinate thousands of school children each year.\u00a0 The piece of a dugout canoe was hidden beneath the Flint River mud in Georgia for centuries until it reappeared during a drought in the early 1970s.\u00a0 Though incomplete, our example measures 20 feet in length.\u00a0 Similar canoes often measure up to 40 feet long.<a href=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2013\/01\/Canoe-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2155\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.wp.cdn.aws.wfu.edu\/sites\/417\/2013\/01\/Canoe-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Southeastern Native Americans shaped their canoes by carefully burning and scraping large pine logs, as shown in these photographs from the MOA archives.\u00a0 Radiocarbon (C14) dating of the charred inner surface of our canoe piece indicates that it was made close to A.D. 970, more than one thousand years ago!<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: This dugout canoe has been donated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncparks.gov\/state-parks\/pilot-mountain-state-park\">Pilot Mountain State Park<\/a>, where it now resides in their Visitors Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Museum&#8217;s dugout canoe is a familiar object to long-time patrons, as it was on display for many years.
