This object would have been used by upper and middle class families during the Tang Dynasty, from 618-907 CE. In the 19th century, it was thought that the aesthetic properties of the headrest would influence dreams. Monks are known to get little sleep each night, so perhaps this monk is awake and smiling to preserve the user\u2019s happy dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>China, 19th c.
